welcome to the dollhouse

Friday, May 21, 2010

From Chicago, we went straight to Minneapolis home of The Replacements and the famous twins Brenda & Brandon from the orig cast 90210. That was the last major US city we stopped in as we cut up to the prairies.

I know I have yammered on about Lula magazine in the past, but one article blew my mind and I had to make a pilgrimage to see its subject matter. Canadian artist Heather Benning took an abandoned farmhouse in Manitoba (the article says Saskatchewan but that is incorrect - it's near Sinclair, MB) and turned it into a life size dollhouse in 2007. Fair warning to Nosey Nancy's (like myself) who decide to make the journey.... the road is all grain elevators and NOTHINGNESS for miles. It was still pretty unbelievable to pull up next to.

Lamb chop's at the door! Semi surreal photo - the sky in the reflection of the plexi glass

The seriously pervy van that carted all my belongings cross country.

and just because the title of this entry happens to coincide with an AMAZING movie from 1995.... here is the trailer.

Our next stop was in Chicago... where I could have unpacked and stayed forever. The Frank Lloyd Wright house was the only touristy thing I was able to do as it was getting late by the time we got there. It's a pretty fantastic house, If you get the chance and you love snooping through peoples old living quarters I highly recommend.

And my lamb chop puppet took up smoking along the way, I must be stressful to hang out with or something.

Lamb Chop

Lamb chop really got into having her photo taken.

and so did my dad, such a fetching crown!

My only regret is that I was enjoying the drive into the city so much that I didn't bother to take any photos of all the abandoned steel mills and insane bridges. Mega bummer.

Next time I'm back in Chi-town, I'm making it my mission to go to Oz park. Bronzed sculptures of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion..... WHO COULD SAY NO TO THAT!?

Hitsville USA

Hitsville USA

Hitsville USA

First (notable) stop on our journey was to Detroit where I insisted on making a Motown pilgrimage to Hitsville USA. Having slept in the van I was feeling less than stellar and a tad on the cheeky side, I ended up autographing a copy of my 7" and slipping it through the post slot. I then laughed myself silly all the way outta town.

Can you believe they had the nerve of being closed on a Monday!?

p.s. I have decided to not let my end of year project go to waste but rather share it with the world... so check it out on myspace (does anyone even use that ancient thing anymore?) The Secret Keepers

p.p.s. it's my mum's birthday and I think she is such a doll.

moose scarf in toronto

moose scarf blue

moose scarf red

I am the worst. EVER. When was my last post? A year ago? Two? I have a medium good excuse though, I managed to move 4 years worth of crap across the country. Even after downsizing my "treasures" I still had a whole van full. Now that I'm back in my hometown with little to no obligations I AM ALL YOURS FROM NOW UNTIL FOREVER....(or when I move again and become MIA). Photos of my epic journey to come.

Last few days in Toronto are a blur.... pretty sure that's the last photo of me in the city. Hudson's Bay moose scarves rule.

p.s. chelsea fc wins the fa cup again and I'm beyond ecstatic. blue still is the colour.
