A short drive south in Alberta takes you to a drastically different climate. As the hills begin to roll, the prairies disappear and the badlands emerge. I haven’t kept my love of the desert a secret, in fact, I’m positive I’ve spoken at length about how magical the Yucca Valley in California is. I think I may have found a Canadian substitute for my beloved Joshua Tree in Wayne, Alberta. 11 bridges crisscrossing over a winding river leads you to the Last Chance Saloon which opened in 1913 (and is rumored to be haunted!). The desert’s draw is strong and I will definitely be heading back down there if only to stay in a themed room at the Rosedeer Hotel. Any excuse to wear cowboy boots I will take.
