I’ve always loved the scent of frankincense for as long as I can remember; it’s always been a staple incense for me. It wasn’t till recently that I realized not only is it aromatic qualities quite pleasing, it also does wonders for your skin. Like many essential oils, its properties come in handy for a myriad health remedies.
Frankincense is the resin from Boswellia trees which grow in rocky regions and are native to the Arabian Peninsula and northeastern Africa. Farmers cut the bark of the trees horizontally to “bleed” out the sap which hardens and turns into resin. The lighter the colour of resin, the higher quality it is. In North America, we’re used to seeing amber hued frankincense, which is a lower grade. Then, the essential oil is made from distilling the resin. BOOM. Frankincense oil! I’m sure it’s much more arduous than it sounds.
The skin benefits from frankincense that I’m most psyched on is its ability to reduce inflammation and discolouration! Here are four of my favourite products I’ve been using lately with frankincense in them. (PS three of the four are made in Canada!)
This magic potion is both a make up remover and a facial cleanser! A little goes a long way and of course it smells like a dream with its main ingredients being: neroli, frankincense, and calendula. This product is made locally in Edmonton, Canada (tour her shop here) Pura is a company that focuses on natural ingredients and is parabin + preservative free!
The combination of aloe with frankincense is so genius. It smells great, it soothes my skin, and a light misting of it can refresh your face. I keep mine at my desk for periodic mistings throughout my workday. It’s also 100% natural and toxin free. BOOM. Did I mention it was also made in Canada?
I first discovered Neal’s Yard Remedies when I was living in London quite a few years ago but they’ve been around since 1981. I appreciate their commitment to natural ingredients and chemical free products. Their frankincense line is incredible – it smells amazing and has done wonders on calming my skin + decreasing my redness. I use this cream in the evening since it’s so thick. It absorbs quickly and leaves my skin feeling super moisturized. This product is made in England.
Where do I even begin with this company? First of all, Warrior Apothecary is made locally in Edmonton, Canada by this awesome lady named April. Her products are all vegan and nut + synthetics free which makes this one of the most inclusive lines I’ve ever come across! This body balm soothes my dry hands and feet like no other, plus it smells like a musky dream.
