Located in the basement of the Mercer Warehouse is the Weekly – a hair salon with a barbershop feel and the coziest spot to get a trim, a colour, or a dreamy terrarium. Owned and operated by the equally chill Craig Boa (who also cuts hair too!)

I have been going here for years mostly because I will follow the lovely Miss Patricia Jastrzebski around wherever she goes but ALSO because the ambience in this place is top shelf. It doesn’t hurt that Transcend is across the hall and they make the best London Fog in town too.

They also stock some of my favourite haircare brands such as Kevin.Murphy and Davines – both lines have insanely nice smelling (as well as effective) product.

All of my best hair days can be directly attributed to Patricia who has done magic for me time and time again. Here are just a couple of examples:

Hideout Distro is a magical shop located in Vacancy Hall (a collective of studio spaces in the basement of the Mercer building) in Edmonton. Tory Culen, owner of Hideout and maker of Karma Victoria jewelry, wanted to create a space that promoted other independent designers and thus the shop came to exist.

The store is stacked full of both local and international talent from prints, patches, pins, jewelry, fragrances, pottery, leather goods, t shirts, and records not to mention an epic vintage section from the now defunct Local Gifts (RIP). With its clubhouse like feel, it’s easy to wander down 104th street to Transcend for a coffee and go curl up in Tory’s velvet armchair for the duration of the afternoon. It’s cozy and welcoming.

Pura Botanicals is a natural skincare line from Edmonton founded by resident alchemist Lane Edwards who is a purveyor of eco-friendly practices and chemical-free cosmetics.

Last month my sister and I went on a tour of the Pura HQ, a serene haven of delicious smelling products and Pinterest worthy decor. It seemed as though each piece of furniture or accessory had a story to accompany it, which is my favourite way to learn about the character of any space. The detail put into each product and every corner of the showroom is evidence of the care that has gone into forming this brand.

We were welcomed by the whole team and fully immersed into the Pura lifestyle. Verdict: we will never look back! Even as I sit here typing this, I am currently spritzing myself with the Desire Mist and breathing deeply.

Aside from their amazing skincare rituals, they also offer the service of bespoke perfume. Imagine a one-on-one meeting to design your own signature scent made the way of traditional perfumes. If that doesn’t sound like a dream come true, I really don’t know what would.

You may remember a previous Shop Spotlight about Bamboo Ballroom, a favourite local clothing shop on Whyte Ave, the Stockroom is their sister location. Expect kitschy new and vintage housewares, a small array of beauty products, handpicked vintage clothing by their house line Heirloom (which is where my vintage has been on sale for the past four months!), local designer pop-up’s, and discounted pieces from their main store. The interior was conceptualized and materialized by the magnificent Nicola Gavins (if you’re not already following her on Pinterest, I suggest getting on that ASAP).

Last Saturday marked the opening of Nowhere Fast Brand’s studio space in Downtown Edmonton and I couldn’t be more thrilled for them! It’s always exciting watching home grown talent flourish. Their space, much like the brand itself, is minimal, bright, and white. Taking these few photographs was a challenge due to the overwhelming amount of attendees.
Check out their new space by appointment – contact info here.

INSIDE | Kit and Ace

Last Thursday marked the opening of Kit and Ace on Whyte Avenue. The lights were dimmed and the store packed with Edmonton’s finest. The sumptuous technical cashmere was celebrated over drinks and snacks and the most insane hot chocolate I have ever tasted. Jacek, a local chocolatier, made a thick cocoa heavy drink garnished with marshmallow kabobs for a chocolate fondue type situation – it was insanely good. The store caters to both men and women; fear not, this cashmere is easy to maintain as it’s machine washable! Guests were sent home with a bulb in a glass vase and I’m happy to report mine is beginning to sprout – update on that later.
